Lenapehoking Adopts the “Union Respect Custom” as an Official Cultural Practice
Lenapehoking — March 17th, 2026
Lenapehoking proudly announces the official adoption of the Union Respect Custom, a cultural greeting practice designed to promote respect for committed relationships, restore clarity in courtship, and strengthen the social fabric of the community.
The Union Respect Custom establishes that individuals who are married or in committed relationships will refrain from physical greetings, such as handshakes or embraces, with members of the opposite sex. In place of these gestures, a respectful non-contact greeting—such as a raised hand, nod, or traditional gesture—will be used. The custom applies equally to both men and women.
Rooted in the understanding that physical greetings have historically symbolized trust, alliance, and energetic exchange, the custom encourages mindfulness in social interactions while honoring the dignity of committed unions.
The adoption follows a full community review process, including resident discussion, feedback integration, and a unanimous response from participating residents. The proposal, introduced by I, Ziya Jahid-Bey, reflects both individual vision and collective refinement, resulting in a cultural standard shaped by the voice of the community.
Additional cultural considerations accompanying the custom include guidance for emergency situations, parental discretion regarding children, and respectful etiquette for couples in social settings. These elements ensure the custom remains practical, adaptable, and aligned with the values of Lenapehoking residents.
The Union Respect Custom represents a step toward cultivating intentional relationships and reinforcing a culture of respect, awareness, and dignity in everyday interactions.
“Customs shape culture, and when even our greetings reflect respect for union and courtship, the character of the entire community is strengthened.”
The custom will now be formally recognized within Lenapehoking and upheld as part of its evolving cultural framework.
